Well would you believe it?
For many from other countries we have the image of American as above averagely wealthy and adventurous. Perhaps it's seeing too many imported US TV shows?
According to a survey commissioned by Skift, the travel habits of Americans is not at all what we may have imagined.
Skift asked the question 'Have you travelled internationally for a holiday in the last year?'
Amazingly almost 80% said that they had not, and even among those respondents aged under 25, more than two thirds said no!
Perhaps not surprisingly income is shown to be a factor when travelling internationally - only in the group of those earning more than $150,000pa had more than half been abroad.
So what conclusions can we draw?
Perhaps the $ exchange rate is an issue? A weak dollar makes staying within the USA a more attractive proposition.
Security concerns are also almost certainly a factor - conflicts and terrorism abroad, perhaps as shown in the American news media may well be persuading holidaymakers that they should vacation domestically.
