Venice's City Council is considering imposing a ban on rolling suitcases with hard wheels from May 2015.
The move is in response to complaints from residents regarding the noise that tourists wheeling their luggage on the City's cobbled streets generates. Unfortunately as transport in Venice is limited, visitors are often left with little option than to pull their wheeled luggage behind them.
The proposed ban appears to take no account of the fact that as far as we at Luggage UK are aware none of the manufacturers who we know of offer cases with pnuematic wheels, and their would appear to be many practical reasons why their introduction would be unlikely. What happens if you get a puncture? Are you prepared to lose part of your suitcase's capacity through the additional space required by larger air filled wheels? Are manufacturers really going to respond to one city introducing such a requirement?
It sounds to us that this proposal is really a non-starter, and that if it is introduced the likely effect may be to reduce visitors to the historic city.
