What's the largest Carry On Bag that you take take in the Cabin with you?

As you may be aware these days there is not a 'one size fits all' as far as Carry On Cabin Luggage is concerned.

While the IATA maximum has remained unchanged at 56x45x25cm for a while, many airlines, particularly the Budget Carriers have adopted smaller maximum sizes for the bag that you're allowed to take on board with you.

easyJet for the majority of 2015 had elected to use a size smaller than IATA, but for the last few months they have re-adopted the 46x45x25cm maximum size for their Cabin Bags. However in increasing the maximum size easyJet no longer guarantee that your Carry On Bag will travel with you in the cabin if the flight is particularly busy.

By contrast Low Cost Airline Ryanair works with a maximum size for Cabin Luggage of
55x40x20cm, much smaller than easyJet and many scheduled carriers such as British Airways.

Have some advice on buying Carry On Cabin Luggage

British Airways reduces maximum size of second cabin bag

British Airways has announced a reduction in the maximum size of the second 'personal' cabin bag that it will allow on its flights from 18 August 2015.

While the dimensions of the primary cabin bag remain constant at 56x45x25cm, the additional bag's maximum dimensions will be reduced from 45x36x20cm to 40x30x15cm.

The personal bag will continue to need to be placed under the seat in front of you, while the you will need to place the main bag in the overhead locker yourself.

EasyJet increases the maximum size of carry on luggage

Without making any formal announcement, budget airline easyJet have increased the maximum size of cabin luggage that you can take aboard their flights.

Since July 2013 they had operated with a maximum size of 50x40x20cm to guarantee that you could take you bag in the cabin.  

From 19 March 2015 they have increased the maximum size to 56x45x25cm (IATA standard), but have withdrawn the guarantee that you'll always be able to put your cabin luggage in the locker.  Easyjet state that due to limited overhead locker space, on busy flights it may be necessary for your cabin baggage to be put in the hold.

US Department of Transport Rules on Musical Instruments

The US Department of Transport (DoT) has issued final rules for American carriers regarding the carriage of musical instruments.

It states that small musical instruments that are within the existing definition of cabin luggage should be stored in an overhead bin or closet or under the seats.  However they make clear that musical instruments should be treated no differently from other carry on luggage, with space still being available on a first come first served basis.

Larger musical instruments that are not checked into the hold may be carried in the cabin provided they are in a case to protect other passengers, and that they can be safely secured in an additional seat purchased by the passenger.

When is cabin luggage not cabin luggage?

With many airlines involved with the never ending quest to remain profitable, it's hardly surprising to find that many choose to reduce the sizes of cabin bags they'll allow on board without making additional charges.

As recently as a couple of years ago almost all carriers followed the IATA cabin size limits of 56x45x25cm.  The luggage manufacturers were geared up to produce bags meeting this size requirement.

Then, noticeably, EasyJet rocked the boat in July 2013 with their guaranteed maximum size of 50x40x20cm.  When this was introduced we were only aware of a handful of cases within this size, and inevitably many of their passengers were caught out with additional charges.

Since then the ranges of most suitcase manufacturers have included a 50cm 'EasyJet size' model alongside the existing IATA cabin size.

With more and more of us choosing to travel with the budget airlines, the luggage manufacturers have finally caught up with Easy Jet's surprise announcement in July 2013 that they were reducing the maximum size for carry on cabin luggage.

Initially there were only 1 or 2 cases on the market that complied with the new maximum size - perhaps this was a ploy by the company to maximise their revenues?

Easy Jet and cabin luggage and suitcases

Most of us like saving money where we can, and so it's not surprising to see the remarkable growth of the budget airlines.

However you can find that the money you thought you'd saved on your flight can soon disappear if your carry on suitcase is bigger than the maximum size allowed by the airline.

If you're flying to the states, or taking internal flights when you're there, you need to know that American, Delta and United airlines have all recently reduced the maximum size of cabin luggage that they will allow on board.

The new sizes are as follows, and none of the dimensions may be exceeded:

American Airlines

Maximum 56x36x23cm

Delta Aitlines

Maximum 56x35x23cm

United Airlines

Maximum 56x35x22cm

Cabin luggage and baggage allowances - hasn't it all got complicated in recent years?

Inevitably many of the changes made by the airlines have been introduced as a way of extracting more money from you the paying traveller.
