In line with market expectations, Gatwick reports that it had had the busiest 6 months in its history with passenger numbers  up 8% to a whopping 22.5 million. Growth is attributable to a combination of more planes, higher load factors and bigger aircraft.

The airport reports strong growth in business travel accounting for around 20% of passengers moving through the terminal.

Improved performance from Qantas

Australian Airline Qantas has just announced that it has returned to profit for the first quarter of financial year 2015.

The CEO says that the company is on track with its plans to return to consistent profitability, and that results can be seen in increasing passenger numbers, operating efficiencies and cost reductions.

The company is in the process of rationalising its aircraft fleet so that in future it has just one type of narrow body and one type of wide body jet in operation resulting in lower maintenance and related costs.

Qantas also identifies its Asian market as being one of the largest and one in which they intend to be strong.

Boeing announce strong third quarter results

Antler and Samsonite cabin suitcases | Fast UK delivery

Boeing has reported strong 3rd quarter results having delivered 186 commercial aircraft in the last three months, a 9% increase on its corresponding 2013 performance.

The company's strong performance is underlined in its reporting that it has an order book for 5,500 aircraft worth a record $430 billion.

When you see the bustle and queues at almost any airport today, it is easy to understand how the aircraft manufacturers are doing so well with our almost insatiable thirst for air travel.

This may not though be all bad for the environment. Developments in fuel efficient designs for both planes and engines will hopefully ensure that we all do not suffer long term harm as a result.
